Joseph P. Lommel funeral card inside view |
Joseph P. Lommel was a major patriarch of my wife's maternal line. This gentleman and his wife Anna Friedrich, subject of an earlier Funeral Card Friday post, raised a total of seventeen (17!) children. They lived in St. Cloud, Minnesota for a large portion of their lives. I will cover Joseph in more detail in a future post. Here's the artwork for Joseph's funeral cards:
You'll note there appear to be two duplicated panels. The Christ figure on the left of this last example is also the same as the one on the right side of the second example. The Mary figure in the 2nd and third examples is also identical. And again we can see oodles of symbolism from every piece of art. If any of you are art historians, I'd love to hear explanations of these cards' symbols! And if you have any inside information on how these cards were designed and/or selected, I'd love to hear that as well. Let me know in the comments below...
Funeral Card Friday is a genealogy meme created by Dee Welborn of Funeral Cards & Genealogy and has been an ongoing series in the Geneablogger community. If you're interested in funeral cards, I strongly recommend you visit her blog!
